Flat Wing kites, like the ones in this video, were very unstable and prone to crash.  These have been replaced by the newer delta wing kites that shows like Tommy Bartlets and Cypress Gardens use now.  These flat wing kites would crash if they got to far onto their side or if they lost the pull from the boat (ie rope was released or boat stopped).  I saw a guy crash onto the shore in front of a crowd in the early 90s.  I thought the guys I saw flying this things were nuts, but some of the guys in this video are flying without a harness...death!

USA Water Ski 75th

USAWS has been posting some sweet old ski pics in celebration of their 75th anniversary.  A couple years ago I came across 8 boxes of old letters and documents from USAWS from the 60s-80s.  It was very interesting reading, from the infighting to the collaboration with other countries governing bodies the whole collection was a great way to spend a couple weeks.  Someday if you guys are lucky maybe I will stop being lazy and post some of the documents on here.  

It is easy for us in the water ski community to bash USAWS for not doing exactly what we want when we want it.  But over the years they have done some great things as well.  For better or worse water skiing would not be where it is today if not for them.  I do have to say that I am happy to see some young blood working at headquarters now.  The new ideas and fresh look at the sport will hopefully help us grow and get back to where we once were and beyond.

Moomba Masters

The first big pro tournament of the year has begun in Australia.  The Moomba Masters is the traditional start of the pro ski season and is a sign that summer is just around the corner!

You're Part of the O'Brien Team Now

First set of modern trick (aka not wooden banana skis) were 44" O'Brien tricks.   Those things were like skiing on two discs.  So easy.  And I still have a old school pair of 70" O'Brien Honeycomb jumpers laying around.
